Chungju Public Health Center Spreads Dementia-Friendly Community Culture Through Nature Interaction Programs

**Residents’ Positive Response to ‘Dementia-Friendly Village Healing Forest Trip’**

Outdoor programs promoted by the Chungju Public Health Center’s Dementia Relief Center to promote mental and physical healing and improve awareness of dementia among local residents have received a great response.

On the 11th, the Chungju Public Health Center’s Dementia Relief Center conducted the "Healing Forest Trip with Dementia-Friendly Village Residents" program for approximately 60 local residents in Jangseon Village, Dongnyang-myeon, and on the 18th in the Jihyeon-dong area. This event was organized to foster emotional stability and health improvement among residents, as well as to improve negative perceptions of dementia to create a community where everyone lives together in harmony.

Residents participating in the program visited the Gyeimyeongsan Healing Forest and fully enjoyed nature under the guidance of forest healing instructors. In addition to experiencing nature with all five senses while walking along forest paths, they also spent time relieving daily fatigue through thermal therapy and singing bowl meditation. In particular, full-body stretching set to the tune of Jindo Arirang and nature play using acacia flowers effectively stimulated cognitive functions by recalling past memories of the participants. In addition, a variety of outdoor activities, such as slingshot shooting and observing natural objects in the forest, continued, enhancing the participants' immersion.

One resident who participated in the event remarked that although they usually spend a lot of time at home, walking with neighbors in the wide-open forest made both their body and mind feel lighter. They expressed their intention to contribute to improving dementia awareness and creating a livable village so that elderly residents with dementia can live comfortably in their hometown. Through the process of enjoying the experience together, residents naturally formed bonds and realized the importance of neighborly care.

An official from the Chungju City Public Health Center stated that it was a meaningful occasion for residents of the Dementia-Friendly Village to communicate and care for their health in nature. They added that they would continue to expand participatory programs to help residents properly understand dementia and care for one another.

Since signing a business agreement with the Gyeimyeongsan Healing Forest in 2023, the Chungju City Public Health Center's Dementia Relief Center has consistently operated forest healing programs for dementia patients, their families, and residents. In October, we plan to continue the healing forest trip for residents of Bongbang-dong and Tappyeong Dementia-Friendly Village in Dongnyang-myeon, and we intend to further accelerate the creation of dementia-friendly communities by designating one additional new Dementia-Friendly Village in the second half of the year.
