Cheongju Mayor Lee Jang-seop Introduces AI-Based Disaster Safety City at Korea-Japan Joint Seminar
Cheongju City has established a disaster safety management system utilizing cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology and unveiled its related vision to the international stage.
On the 11th, Cheongju Mayor Lee Jang-seop attended the 17th Korea-Japan Joint Seminar held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and delivered a keynote speech on the theme of "Challenges Left by the Osong Disaster and the Vision of Cheongju as an AI-Based Disaster Safety City."
Co-hosted by the Korea Institute of Local Administration and the Japan Association for the Internationalization of Local Governments, this seminar was organized to bring together local governments and experts from both countries to explore disaster response and regional revitalization strategies. This year, Cheongju City and Kesennuma City from Japan participated to engage in in-depth discussions on ways to strengthen urban resilience.
In his lecture, Mayor Lee analyzed the causes of the past Osong disaster and identified the failure of fragmented disaster management information to be consolidated into a single decision-making system as a major limitation. Accordingly, he emphasized the urgent need for a fundamental systemic shift to rapidly assess dispersed information and connect it to actual response actions.
Cheongju Mayor Lee Introduces AI-Based Disaster Safety City at Korea-Japan Joint Seminar Based on this awareness of the problem, Cheongju plans to complete an "AI City Safety System" by 2030 that integrates various risk information, such as AI-powered closed-circuit television, river water levels, rainfall, and road closures. Through this, the city aims to proactively detect signs of danger and create an environment where on-site personnel can focus on core tasks, such as guiding evacuations.
In addition, plans were presented to establish a memorial space to ensure the records and lessons of the tragedy are not forgotten, and to actively utilize it for disaster safety education for future generations.
Cheongju intends to continuously pursue the creation of a safe city capable of responding rapidly to and recovering from any crisis situation by combining systems, education, and cutting-edge technology.
