Cheongju University Selected for New Projects in Ministry of Education’s 2026 Science and Engineering Academic Research Support Program

Funding Supported for 4 Graduate Students on Science and Engineering Research Projects

Accelerating Research in AI, Hydrogen, Sports Medicine, and Landscape Architecture

Cheongju University has demonstrated its research competitiveness in science and engineering by having a large number of graduate students selected for new projects under the ‘2026 Science and Engineering Academic Research Support Program,’ organized by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

This academic research support program is designed to directly support the costs of research activities at the graduate level, enabling graduate students in science and engineering to grow into independent researchers. At Cheongju University, four graduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Systems Engineering, the Department of Sports Medicine, and the Department of Landscape Architecture were finally selected to carry out cutting-edge research projects in their respective fields.

Looking at the details of the research projects, a master's student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Systems Engineering is embarking on the development of an AI condition-based maintenance system that combines deep learning-based condition diagnosis technology with a digital twin of a turboprop engine for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to predict failures in advance and determine the optimal timing for maintenance. A doctoral researcher from the same department is studying a fatigue crack growth prediction model that incorporates the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement, which occurs when hydrogen penetrates into metals in cryogenic environments such as liquid hydrogen storage.

Additionally, a master's student in the Department of Sports Medicine plans to compare postural control strategies between the elderly and adults using biomechanical data, and to present a fall risk prediction model for the elderly that combines muscle synergy analysis with CNN deep learning technology. A doctoral student in the Department of Landscape Architecture will develop a model to precisely evaluate the ecological health status of street trees by training an artificial intelligence with field photos and survey data of street trees in the Cheongju region, and will verify its performance.

The selected researchers will receive research funding of up to 12 million KRW for master's students and up to 25 million KRW for doctoral students to conduct full-scale research for approximately one year.

An official from Cheongju University stated that the selection for this project demonstrates the excellent research capabilities of graduate students in key future industrial fields such as artificial intelligence, future mobility, hydrogen energy, sports medicine, and landscape architecture. The official added that the university will continue to provide comprehensive support to ensure that young researchers can immerse themselves in creative research in a stable environment.
