Chungju City and the Korea Taekkyon Association Sign Series of Agreements with Local Vietnamese Organizations… Accelerating the Globalization of Taekkyon
Chungju City and the Korea Taekkyon Association visited Hanoi, Vietnam, to hold a series of meetings with local organizations and establish a foundation for the global transmission of Taekkyon, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Officials from Chungju and the Association visited Hanoi from September 7 to 10 to discuss concrete implementation plans for training local Taekkyon instructors and strengthening global competitiveness, initiatives scheduled to begin in 2025. On the first day of the visit, they signed a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnam branch of the Korea Food for the Hungry and Relief Organization and agreed to establish regular Taekkyon programs at four Samsung Hope Schools. They also devised plans to host a joint Taekkyon competition in the future. Subsequently, they visited key organizations such as the Korean Association of Hanoi, the Korea International School, and the Taekwondo Federation, reaching a consensus on establishing Taekkyon courses in after-school programs in 2027, supporting performances by the Municipal Taekkyon Team, hosting a large-scale Taekkyon seminar next year, and opening Vietnam's first Taekkyon training center. In addition, they visited the Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam to discuss plans to showcase performances by the Municipal Taekkyon Team and the Uruk Traditional Music Ensemble at major local festivals, significantly expanding the potential for economic, cultural, and tourism cooperation between Chungju and Vietnam through traditional martial arts.
An official from the Korea Taekkyon Association stated that Hanoi shares a historical commonality with Chungju as a center of resistance against the Mongol invasion. He announced plans to go beyond martial arts exchanges to deepen cultural ties between the two countries, expand the domestic base, and pursue continuous globalization initiatives.
An official from Chungju City also emphasized plans to dispatch professional personnel, including full-time instructors and members of the Municipal Taekkyon Team, to Hanoi to develop it into a hub for Taekkyon in Southeast Asia. He further stated that they intend to broaden the scope of global exchange by showcasing various performances representing K-culture, such as "Taekbolution"—a fusion cultural arts content—in addition to Taekkyon.
