Jecheon City Public Health Center and Susan Branch Health Center to Abruptly Introduce 'Private Partner Doctors'... Overcoming Public Health Doctor Supply Shortage

The Jecheon City Public Health Center is implementing preemptive measures to reduce the gap in medical services in vulnerable rural and fishing communities caused by the nationwide reduction in public health doctors.

The Jecheon City Public Health Center announced that it has appointed a private specialist as a 'partner doctor' at the Susan Branch Health Center and has begun operating a temporary medical support system for residents in earnest.

This measure follows the expansion of the temporary allowance for medical practices outside of medical institutions implemented by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. With the relaxation of legal standards, a foundation has been established for professional personnel, such as private practitioners, to provide outpatient care on a part-time basis at public health institutions like public health centers and branch health centers.

Until now, rural branch health centers have relied heavily on public health doctors for primary basic medical care. However, as the nationwide shortage of public health doctors has become prolonged due to factors such as the recent increase in medical students taking military leave and disparities in service periods, the Jecheon City Public Health Center has accelerated plans to link local private medical resources.

The specialist appointed as a collaborating physician at the Susan Health Sub-center will be stationed on-site for 10 hours a week until this coming December to provide essential basic medical services to residents, including outpatient consultations, prescription issuance, and health counseling.

An official from the Jecheon City Public Health Center stated that this system was introduced to ensure the uninterrupted maintenance of the sub-center's primary care functions despite the challenging circumstances of a public health doctor shortage. The official emphasized that they will continue to identify multifaceted measures to improve medical accessibility for rural residents and continuously reduce blind spots in healthcare.
