【충북 브레이크뉴스】임창용 기자=이광희 의원이 해방 후 경찰 최고위직 인사 중 다수가 일제 순사, 고등경찰 등 친일 경력을 가졌다고 밝히며 경찰청에 역사 왜곡 중단을 촉구했다.

국회 행정안전위원회 소속 이광희 의원(더불어민주당, 청주서원)이 정리한 자료에 따르면, 대한민국 경찰의 역대 치안국장 다수가 친일반민족행위자 명단과 일제 기록에 이름이 오른 인물이었다. 초대 경무부장인 조병옥은 미군정 시기 친일 경찰을 대거 채용해 경찰 조직의 기틀을 다졌으며, 제주 4.3 사건에서 민간인 학살을 주도하기도 했다.

김태선, 이익흥, 홍순봉, 문봉제, 김종원 등 역대 치안국장들 역시 일제 경찰로 활동하며 독립운동가 검거와 고문에 가담하고, 일부는 일본군 지원과 독립군 토벌에 참여해 훈장까지 받은 것으로 확인됐다.

그러나 경찰청은 공식 누리집에 이들의 재임 기간과 사진만 나열할 뿐, 친일 행적에 대해서는 전혀 언급하지 않고 있다. 이 의원은 경찰청이 마치 민주적 정통성을 가진 기관처럼 홍보하는 것은 역사 왜곡이라고 비판했다. 그는 "경찰의 출발점을 미군정청 경찰국에서 찾는 것 자체가 미군정이 친일 경찰을 대거 등용한 사실을 스스로 인정하는 셈"이라고 지적했다.

이번 조사에서는 충북을 포함한 여러 지방경찰청에서도 친일 경력을 가진 국장들이 확인됐지만, 역시 공식 기록에는 관련 설명이 없었다.

이 의원은 "경찰 수뇌부가 친일 경찰 출신이라는 사실을 숨기는 것은 국민의 안전을 책임질 기관으로서의 정체성을 훼손하는 행위"라며 "경찰청은 이제라도 친일 인사들의 행적을 체계적으로 조사해 정직하게 공개해야 한다"고 강조했다. 그는 경찰 조직 스스로가 과거를 바로잡기 위한 노력이 필요하다고 덧붙였다.

Rep. Lee Kwang-hee revealed that many of the highest-ranking police officers after liberation had pro-Japanese backgrounds, including as Japanese police officers and senior police officers, and urged the National Police Agency to cease distorting history.

Rep. Lee stated, "Hiding the fact that police leadership is comprised of pro-Japanese police officers undermines its identity as an agency responsible for the safety of the people. The NPA must now systematically investigate and honestly disclose the activities of these pro-Japanese figures." He added that the police organization itself must make efforts to correct its past.
